When planning a metal building or barndominium, the cost of dirt work often surprises people. Site preparation can range anywhere from $0 to $30,000, and for many, that alone can make a project unaffordable.

Most contractors have you hire a subcontractor for grading, then leave you guessing about the cost. They’ll say things like “It’ll take 15 loads,” or throw around terms like “bobtails” and “bellydumps.”But how many loads is that really? And what’s it going to cost in the end?

We do things differently at McKnight Construction.

We take the guesswork out by performing a grading analysis using a Moasure 2, a device to measure the exact elevation profile of your property We also check the depth of your topsoil, which helps us determine how much material must be removed. Then we fly a drone over the property to capture a detailed aerial photo.

We combine all of this data with the floor plan of your building and input it into our grading software. The result? A clear, accurate estimate of how much select fill and equipment time is required to build the pad—before you ever break ground.

Don’t Let the Unknown Stop Your Build

If uncertainty about site costs is holding you—or someone you know—back from building the space you need, let us perform a grading analysis to give you real numbers and a real plan.

That’s it for this edition ofMcKnight Insite and until next time, remember, Built Right. Built McKnight.
